Gwen Stefani Is Back In The Studio “Writing Songs Like I’ve Never Written”

Gwen Stefani has been slowly getting back into music lately. Although she was working on an album with No Doubt as of 2013, last year she shifted focus to a new solo album instead. In late 2014, Gwen Stefani released the singles “Baby Don’t Lie” and “Spark The Fire,” both from her unfinished record. Earlier this year, she also performed a new ballad called “Start A War,” which would have been great as single number 3. But then there was just silence.

Gwen quietly continued working on her new music in the spring, but there was no concrete information on when an album would be ready or a next single would be released. Then, in August, Gwen and her husband Gavin Rossdale announced their divorce after nearly 13 years of marriage.

Now that the power couple has officially split, it seems like Gwen has newfound inspiration for her music. She recently told Too Fab, “I’m literally writing like I’ve never written, I think ever. Every time I go in the studio – which I don’t have a lot of time in my life – so when I’ve gone in, every single time I have written a song.” She continued:

I have close to ten songs, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s over a very short amount of time. It’s never happened. So I am in a really good place for writing and I think that has a lot to do with being on the show last season and also just, I don’t know, just opening up and being on a journey to get to this point to be able to write again.

I have never been in a place, where I’m like outside all my life, where all I want to do is get in the studio. It was always like a chore, like “Oh no I have to go to the studio, I am not going to be able to do it. What am I going to say?” Like it’s an opposite, it’s like I gotta get in the studio. When is there time, you know? Every time I go, I know I’m going to have a song and every time I have a song I get to play it really loud in my car and it’s really fun.

Gwen did not specify if these songs are for her solo album or a No Doubt record, but it’s most likely the former. The band has been very quiet the past two years and have made no mentions of new music in quite a while.

It is interesting that Gwen noted that she has about 10 songs now. As of late 2014, she already had a good list of known song titles for her upcoming solo album. Apart from the two singles and “Start A War” – as well as the Paddington movie song “Shine”half a dozen titles were also registered in her name.

Have those 2014 songs been scrapped? Is Gwen starting over on her solo album? Or will her 10 new songs be added to her pre-existing batch of songs? And if the breakup has been a big inspiration for Gwen, could the new songs lean towards the Tragic Kingdom and Return Of Saturn sound of No Doubt’s middle years? Only time will tell, but it’s good to know that Gwen is actively working on new music.
