Katy Perry has been steadily working on her upcoming album, the followup to 2013’s Prism. Our first single from the still-unnamed record is “Chained To The Rhythm,” featuring Skip Marley. The midtempo dancehall song takes Katy further into political territory, a natural progression from her enthusiastic support of Hillary Clinton last year. Though some fans may have been expecting something bigger, “Chained To The Rhythm” is among Katy’s best songs to date.
Musically, the song is catchy and the lyrics are memorable enough to get stuck after just one or two listens. This earworm quality matches the chorus telling you to zone out and mindlessly enjoy the music. But listen more closely and you’ll notice the social awareness the lyrics inspire. Why do people live through a lens? Why don’t people notice the troubles in the world? It might be because of the feel-good distractions that abound. “Chained To The Rhythm” is a politically charged, intelligent song disguised as pop candy.
The lyric video provides another take on the lyrical message. It looks like one of those tiny food videos, with fingers reaching into a miniature kitchen to make little hamburgers and spaghetti. Ultimately, the lyric video reveals its unlikely star: a hamster. The furry rodent is busy watching another hamster running the wheel on the TV, oblivious to his tiny food’s origin. It’s a cute clip.
