Sara Bareilles Hoping To Release New Album At End Of 2017

In 2015, Sara Bareilles composed all the music for a new musical, Waitress, based on a 2007 indie movie of the same name. Sara released an album of some of those songs called What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress that November. However, Sara’s last proper (non-musical) album was The Blessed Unrest in 2013. It’s been a few years since “Brave” became a massive hit and her album was nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy award. So it’s no surprise that her fans – and record label – miss having her around the pop world. Luckily, we may not have to wait too much longer.

Sara and Jessie Mueller, the star of Waitress, sat down for an in-depth interview for Build Series. They talked about the Broadway hit musical, but Sara also mentioned a new album. In explaining why she can’t step in as Jenna in the musical, Sara revealed she has another obligation:

Right now I’ve got a record label that is on my ass being like, “Yeah, cool, musical theater, great, love it. Can we please write some songs?” So my number one priority right now is to work on my next record… I gotta work on a record and go try to remember how to be Sara for a minute.

So when can we expect to hear the new album? “I told them the end of the year, but good luck!”

Sara also talked about how writing for the musical has taught her how to throw away the songwriting rulebook and learn how to really tell a story. She learned how to “play outside the sandbox,” stylistically and in terms of developing another character’s perspective. Sara continued:

I feel like I’m in a different mindset also because of our global consciousness right now. I feel like it’s a really important time to be really intentional, and really mindful about speaking to the things that matter to me in the world. I’m excited to pour some of what I have to say into a record.

It sounds like Sara may discuss politics on the next album. She already delved into politics a bit on a song she wrote called “Seriously,” written from the perspective of President Barack Obama.

Check out the full interview below. They start talking about Sara’s next album at 18:37.

Sara is tentatively planning to release a new album at the end of this year. She didn’t mention how far into the writing process she is just yet, but it sounds like she has a ways to go still. She has not yet begun recording it. We can expect to hear some politically conscious songs, in addition to the relationship-oriented and empowering music she’s known for.

While we wait for album #5, re-listen to The Blessed Unrest and What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress. If you’re able to make it to Broadway, you’ll also want to see Waitress. Book fans will also love Sara’s 2015 autobiography, Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) In Song. It’s a must-read.
