It’s no secret that Avril Lavigne has had a few tough years. After months of mounting concerns, in April 2015 Avril revealed that she was battling Lyme disease. She didn’t let that get her down, though, and channeled her illness into new music. She released a charity single, “Fly,” that year, and signed on to voice Snow White in an upcoming animated film called Charming. (The film will also come with a new song written by Fall Out Boy.) Other than that, she’s been pretty quiet for the last two years.
But now we can confirm: Avril Lavigne is back! Avril is officially planning to release new music in the new year. Check out her exciting announcement below:
Hi Everyone!! I wanted to first thank my fans for your patience & support during my time away throughout my battle with Lyme Disease over the past 2 years. It hasn't just been a hard battle but it's also been enlightening and will reflect in my new music, artistry, life, and personally. I will always continue to make it a priority to fight and raise awareness about Lyme Disease with the Avril Lavigne foundation. I'm really happy to announce that I am now working on new music and I will be releasing a new album in 2017. I can't wait to open up and share my heart with you! I'm excited for you guys to hear the new songs. It's going to be an amazing 2017!
Avril has been steadily writing and demoing new music at least since 2015, and has shared social updates intermittently. She says the new music will reflect her personal and health changes.
How will her new music sound? That remains to be seen, but we can only imagine that it will be very personal, describe overcoming difficult times, and ultimately be empowering. “Fly” may be just a hint of the direction she plans to go. Or perhaps we can expect something like “Brave” by Sara Bareilles, or “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson? We do hope it will see a return of real instruments and mature themes, perhaps sonically similar to her 2011 album, Goodbye Lullaby. What do you think the new music will sound like? What do you hope to hear?
Her last album, 2013’s Avril Lavigne, was a roller coaster of an album. While the singles were mostly generic or immature, it had impressive album tracks that showed growth. Unfortunately, the album had messy promotion and limited success.
At this point, it is unclear what Avril’s current label is. She no longer seems to be with Epic. The question remains: Will she have more creative freedom and artistic expression this time around? It’s clearly what her fans want, and probably what she wants.
Avril promises a new album in 2017, though in which of the 12 months is still a mystery. Hopefully we’ll hear her new music sooner rather than later. Keep checking back here for all the latest Avril Lavigne music news.
