Kelly Clarkson’s “Piece By Piece” Is The Perfect Sequel To “Because Of You”

Piece by piece we’re getting Kelly Clarkson’s new album, out on March 3rd. The week started off with an ethereal anthem written by Sia, “Invincible.” That’s a tough act to follow, but today’s new track may be even better.

“Piece By Piece” is a moving mid-tempo song Kelly wrote about her father. She has already described it as the sequel to her 2004 ballad “Because Of You,” and it closes the chapter perfectly. Whereas “Because Of You” described the pain her parents’ divorce caused her when she was a child, leaving her wary of relationships and doubtful that she’d ever have a family of her own, “Piece By Piece” brings resolution. Kelly sings to her father that he was never there for her, that he left holes in her that took years to fill. But now, Kelly has found a man who loves her and is a good father to their newborn daughter. Despite the neglect and lack of love from her father, Kelly has found love and happiness in her adult life.

It’s a tearjerker of a song, and one of the most personal songs we’ve heard from Kelly. It makes the perfect title track for Kelly’s upcoming album. “Piece By Piece” continues the ethereal quality heard on “Invincible,” so it sounds like this will be a cohesive, yet diverse, album.

Piece By Piece will be out on March 3rd, but if you pre-order it on iTunes, you’ll get instant downloads of the lead single “Heartbeat Song,” the empowering “Invincible,” and today’s emotional title track. The fun won’t end there, either. Tomorrow we’ll get to hear Kelly’s duet with John Legend, “Run Run Run,” and then the week will end with “Take You High” and “Someone,” so stay tuned!

Lyrics

And all I remember is your back
Walking towards the airport leaving us all in your past
I traveled 1500 miles to see you
Begged you to want me
But you didn’t want to

But piece by piece he collected me
Up off the ground where you abandoned things, yeah
And piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
At six years old, and no
He never walks away, he never asks for money
He takes care of me, he loves me
Piece by piece he restored my faith
That a man can be kind
And a father could
Stay

And all of your words fall flat
I made something of myself and now you wanna come back
But your love it isn’t free
It has to be earned
Back then I didn’t have anything you needed
So I was worthless

But piece by piece he collected me
Up off the ground where you abandoned things, yeah
And piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
At six years old, and no
He never walks away, he never asks for money
He takes care of me, cause he loves me
Piece by piece he restored my faith
That a man can be kind
And a father could stay

Piece by piece, piece by piece
Piece by piece, piece by piece
Piece by piece, piece by piece

Piece by piece I fell far from the tree
I will never leave her like you left me
And she will never have to wonder her worth
Because unlike you I’m gonna put her first, and no
He’ll never walk away, he’ll never break her heart
He’ll take care of things, he’ll love her
Piece by piece he’ll restore my faith
That a man can be kind
And a father should be
Great
