Album of the Week: Avril Lavigne
It’s been one full year since Avril Lavigne released her self-titled 5th album, and after all these months, it still remains an intriguing and impressive album. Despite some acclaim from critics, Avril Lavigne failed to do especially well commercially, and is Avril’s lowest selling album to date. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it has some of the best songs of her career so far. (Please note that “Hello Kitty” does not represent the full album.)
The best way to look at Avril Lavigne is as a two-sided coin. The album is largely divided into two rather distinct sounds: First, there’s the sugary, poppy half that’s supposed to be more radio friendly and feel-good. Songs like “Here’s To Never Growing Up,” “Sippin’ On Sunshine,” and “17” are fun, though a bit more safe for the pop singer.
The second half of the album is arguably better – it’s certainly a bit darker and more introspective. It’s more like Avril’s previous album, and more in line with the personal mood she had with her first two records; these are interesting songs that see Avril trying out new sounds and topics.
This is also where you’ll find the highlights on Avril Lavigne: “Give You What You Like,” “Hello Heartache,” “Bad Girl,” “Hush Hush,” and her two fully self-penned songs, “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” and “Falling Fast.”
Avril Lavigne was undeservedly ignored by the majority of the public, but it is a fine album that more people should hear. It is our inaugural Album Of The Week, and a diverse collection of songs that will leave you eager for another listen.
